Tales of the Bottomlands

Ongoing project: 2023-2024

As The Nature Conservancy got set to launch a new carbon credit reforestation project along the Mississippi River, they knew they had a storytelling challenge. The political and ecological story of the Mississippi’s former floodplain is a tangle.

We recruited award-winning photographer (and frequent collaborator) Rory Doyle to join the project, then worked with TNC to develop a package of profiles and stories that tell the story of the hardwood bottomlands of the Mississippi Alluvial Valley. That includes everyone from the acorn collectors who supply the local nurseries to Black landowners who have been too often overlooked by the growing restoration economy.
